OWL Quick Start Guide

  • Create Some Sample User Accounts

  • Users Can Have More than One Role

  • Users Can be Organized into Classes

TIPS: Start Small * Don't try to build out your entire domain at once * Learn what works best with a few sample accounts first

 
  • First, Watch Understanding Test Structure

  • Start by Building a Small Test

  • Try Out Different Item Types

  • Set up Randomization

  • Build and Assign Rubrics

  • Assign Points to your Test, Last

TIPS: Give your test takers good directions * Don't try to recreate the paper and pencil experience exactly * Consider how your examinee will interact with your online test, one screen at a time * Use properties like response timers and forward only to control the test taker's experience

 
  • Every Test MUST have at least ONE Section.

  • All Sections MUST have at least ONE Item.

  • ONLY ONE of each Item/Section (tracking #) is permitted.

  • Create Assignment

  • Add Webcam Monitoring (optional)

  • Add Notifications (optional)

  • Add Some Users to the Rosters

  • Log in as a Sample Student and Take Exam

  • Use the Progress Monitor to Oversee Testing

  • If you need to make changes, delete sample sessions / responses.

TIPS: Login as a sample student using the browser your test takers are likely to use in guest mode.

 
  • Review Auto-scoring

  • Login as Rater to Perform Rating (if applicable)

  • Finalize Assessments

  • Publish Results (optional)

  • Log in as a Student to View Results

TIPS: Even though you are not performing manual ratings, the OWL Rater Module is a useful tool to view and/or adjust auto-scoring for a response.

 
  • Run Reporting on Sample Responses

  • Download and Verify Response, Rating and Scoring Data

  • Carefully Delete Any Sample Responses to Unlock Test

TIPS: Download your Reporting to View Data as Spreadsheet or Import Data to Your Preferred Analytics Program * Repeat this Process Making Required Adjustments by Returning to Step 2.

Why am I getting this message? "Authorization has been denied for this request"

This message typically appears when you have been logged into the OWL TMS for an extended period of time. The message appears in a pink box located in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen when you have an expired browser token.
To resolve this error, simply take the following steps:

  1. Logout of the OWL Test Management System

  2. Start a New Browsing Session preferably in guest mode

  3. Log back into OWL
