Building a Flight Path (a.k.a Dynamic Feedback)

Customized Feedback for Automatically Scored Testing
Use this option to Provide Custom Feedback, when you are NOT linking to another OWL Assignment. Use these instructions for OWL Assignment Linking.


  1. Select Flight Paths from the Building menu

  2. Use the Create button

  3. Fill in the descriptor fields including:

    • Name (required) This will appear in the OWL builder dropdown.

    • Description (optional)

    • Sync ID (required) This will be automatically provided, but can be overridden to any unique value by the user.

    • Keywords (optional)

  4. Score Type: Percentage or Points. Choose if the score you are listing in your flight path rows is a percentage of total points or the number of test points the student earned.

    Complete Each Flight Path Row

  5. Score - This is the minimum score to receive this corresponding feedback.

  6. Show Close Button

    • Yes - allows the Test Taker to exit the test.

    • No - will not display the close button. This is useful is when directing the test taker to use a link.

  7. Text -Enter what the test taker will see at the end of the test. Use the text editing controls to include formatting and links.

    To further customize what the individual sees at the end of their test use Dynamic Feedback Variables (see below).

  8. Click + Add New Option to add the Row to your Flight Path. The new row will appear above the previous.

    Continue Adding Flight Path rows for every threshold score using the + Add New Option button

  9. Save and Close the Flight Path Editor

The OWL Assignment MUST be set to "Show Instant Test Results"

Dynamic Feedback Variables

Customize your Auto-scored Test Feedback using OWL System Variables.


OWL System Variables

To add OWL system variables (or merge fields) into your feedback template, simply type the variable as it appears below, including the [ ].

[EXAMINEE_NAME] - The test taker's full name (e.g. John Smith)

[EXAMINEE_FIRSTNAME] - The test taker's first name (e.g. John)

[EXAMINEE_LASTNAME] - The test taker's last name (e.g. Smith)

[EXAMINEE_USERNAME] - The student's login user name in OWL. (e.g. jsmith@email.com)

[EXAMINEE_TRACKING] - Unique ID for the student generated by OWL.

[EXAMINEE_SYNCID] - External unique ID.

[ASSIGNMENT_MAXSCORE:F2] - The maximum points that were possible for the test.

[ASSIGNMENT_LEVEL] - Adaptive level of the activity.

[ASSIGNMENT_SCORE:F2] - The points earned on the test.

[ASSIGNMENT_PERCENTAGE:P2] - Examinee Score/Maximum Score.

[OWL_URL] - The URL to the OWL website. Placing this variable in your e-mail will allow the student to follow the hyperlink to launch the OWL login screen.


Auto-scored Variables

[ASSIGNMENT_MAXSCORE:F2] - The maximum points that were possible for the test

[ASSIGNMENT_LEVEL] - Adaptive level of the activity

[ASSIGNMENT_SCORE:F2] - The points earned on the test

[ASSIGNMENT_PERCENTAGE:P2] - Examinee Score/Maximum Score
